Jonnie Irwin's pals share heartbreak after star is diagnosed with terminal cancer

A Place In The Sun presenter Jonnie Irwin has been sent an abundance of supportive messages following the heartbreaking news that he has terminal cancer.

The father-of-three has been diagnosed with lung cancer, which has now spread to his brain and he says he was given six months to live. The 48-year-old had kept his illness a secret but decided he wanted to share his story to "get the monkey off his back".

On his Instagram page, Jonnie told his followers that he had "some sad news" alongside a family snap that features in his interview with Hello! magazine.

His A Place In The Sun co-presenter Jasmine Harman wrote: "Words can’t fix much, but what lovely words of support you have had here Jonnie. I know you know this already, but I am here for you my dear friend, and Jess and the boys. So, so brave. Sending lots of love. speak soon, Jx."

Lucy Alexander penned: "Jonnie. I get so much joy watching you & your boys on here. You’re one hellava Flippin amazeballs presenter and I’m sending so soooo much love & strength."

Nicki Chapman, who hosted reality TV show Pop Idol, wrote: "Love you guys so much," while Ginny Buckley added: "Sending love and a hug to you and your beautiful family."

In his heartbreaking interview, Jonnie told Hello!: "I don’t know how long I have left, but I try to stay positive and my attitude is that I'm living with cancer, not dying from it. I set little markers – things I want to be around for. I got into the habit of saying: 'Don't plan ahead because I might not be well enough.' But now I want to make plans.

"I want to make memories and capture these moments with my family because the reality is, my boys are going to grow up not knowing their dad and that breaks my heart."

Jonnie first noticed something wasn't right when his vision went blurry when he was driving in Italy in 2020 whilst filming. The presenter said how a week later he had to tell his wife Jessica, 40, the devastating news.

He said that he's heartbroken that Jessica would be left on her own with their three boys. But despite his illness, Jonnie has been working as much as he can whilst he's been undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

He went on to explain that he is telling his story now as he felt like he was carrying around a "dirty secret" and felt like he wanted to tell the world what was going on for him. The dad said that he hoped he might "inspire" others who are also living with life-limiting illnesses.
