Jonathan Groff likens starring in Looking to attending therapy

Jonathan Groff starred in the HBO show

Jonathan Groff found starring in 'Looking' to be like "therapy".

The 39-year-old actor previously played Patrick Murray in the HBO comedy-drama series - which centres on three gay friends who live and work in San Francisco - and Jonathan has likened appearing in the TV show to a "rebirth".

The actor - who publicly came out as gay in 2009 - said at the 2024 Vulture Festival: "[The show] was like a rebirth, like falling in love with the idea of being gay.

"For me, it was like therapy.”

Jonathan attended the New York City Pride parade back in 2014, and although he was initially hesitant about the idea, the actor relished the experience in the end.

Jonathan - who attended the parade alongside Frankie J. Alvarez, his 'Looking' co-star - shared: "I didn’t feel comfortable to even be in the parade that year.

"I was like: ‘I guess I’m doing the show,’ so I got to get on the parade, and I remember being with [Frankie] on the front of that car and going like: ‘Oh my God, this is f****** amazing.’ And that was what the whole show was like."

Meanwhile Jonathan previously revealed that he was inspired to come out as gay after seeing Michelangelo's David sculpture.

The 'Frozen' star recalled travelling around Italy in 2008 and he explained how the sculpture changed his outlook.

He wrote in Conde Nast Traveler magazine: "I started crying and wondered, 'What is it about this naked man that makes me so emotional?'

"Afterward, I sat in a piazza, journaling, thinking about how nobody here knew or cared about me, and I decided to come out to my brother - who is also named David - the next day.

"Only my roommate knew I was gay, because he was also my secret boyfriend."
