Jonas Vingegaard sets sights on Tour de France-Vuelta a Espana double alongside Primoz Roglic

Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard has set his sights on winning next month’s Vuelta a Espana as his Jumbo-Visma team bid for a clean sweep of the Grand Tours in 2023.

Primoz Roglic denied Geraint Thomas victory in the Giro d’Italia before Vingegaard dominated the latter stages of this Tour.

Following a successful defence of his 2022 Tour title, Vingegaard revealed that he and Roglic would be part of a two-pronged attack aimed at winning the Vuelta.

“See you in Barcelona in the Vuelta,” he said in Paris following his win. “I will try to go for the GC [General Classification], and Primoz will as well. Obviously, we are the two leaders.

“We made the decision already in November last year, so it’s been the plan all the time but now is the moment to break the news. I’m really looking forward to the Vuelta as well.

“Of course, I will enjoy today. I will enjoy the Tour de France win but then in one week’s time from now, I’ll start focusing on the Vuelta.”

Vingegaard is bidding to become the first man to achieve the Tour-Vuelta double since Chris Froome back in 2017.

Jumbo-Visma have replaced Froome’s former Sky - now Ineos Grenadiers - team as the dominant force in cycling, and their team manager Richard Plugge said earlier in the season that “winning three Grand Tours this year is the goal”.

Dane Vingegaard received a call from Crown Prince Frederik, the heir to the throne in Denmark, in the aftermath of his successful Tour defence and said he planned to celebrate his win with a doner kebab back at home.

“It’s been a super hard race and super good fight between me and Tadej [Pogacar],” said Vingegaard. “I hope to come back next year to see if I can take the third win.”
