Director Jon Favreau is doing all he can to shake off accusations that The Mandalorian and Grogu is just a big-screen TV episode.
"That level of spectacle is what I was aspiring to," Favreau told SFX magazine of the scale present during Mando's feature-length outing. "You really want to pull out all the stops, because people are asking, ‘Okay, is this just the TV show [on the big screen]?’ Well, there’s only one way to answer that question, and that’s to sit in a movie theater and watch it. I have to make my case that we made the most of this opportunity."
The Mandalorian, charting the adventures of Din Djarin and the child formerly known as Baby Yoda, spent three seasons on Disney Plus – including a crossover arc with The Book of Boba Fett.
The Mandalorian and Grogu was then announced during 2023's Star Wars Celebration (including a 'Mando-verse' movie that has yet to be followed up on), with Pedro Pascal returning alongside series newcomers Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White.
Details on the story remain mostly under wraps, however, with even the latest trailer keeping schtum on plot beats in what has been the latest round of confusing marketing, including a Super Bowl TV spot that disappointed its audience.
Over 15 minutes of footage was debuted at CinemaCon, detailing both the movie's opening sequence and confirmation that it is seemingly the first Star Wars movie with opening credits instead of the traditional crawl of text.
The Mandalorian and Grogu races into cinemas on May 22.
