Johnstone Burgh urged to return to winning ways to keep promotion hope alive

Burgh boss Jamie McKim insists his side need to start picking up maximums to keep their promotion dream alive.

The Keanie Park club earned what would in normal circumstances be deemed a respectable draw against title hopefuls St Cadoc’s, with Thomas Cruden cancelling out the visitors’ opener.

But with a chance of making it into the WoSFL Premier Division on the line, McKim believes the club simply must start winning again after picking up just a point from their last two matches.

McKim said: “I thought we were excellent throughout and in the second half we were by far the superior side.

“We had chances to win it and unfortunately we’ve been punished for switching off on a cheap set -piece.

“We let them have a free header, which doesn’t usually happen with us. Our defence is normally so tight.

“They were setting the pace when we last played them in December, but we turned the table a bit on Saturday, and I felt we were the better side putting them under pressure.

“It was an opportunity missed, though, in terms of not picking up the win. We’ve still got a big chance but we need to start winning now.

“We’ve not had the rub of the green lately and the boys deserve credit for battling on and not downing tools. But there’s no time left for excuses now.

“We need to start winning games to give ourselves a chance of going up at the business end of the season.”

Currently sitting six points off St Cadoc’s, who now occupy the last promotion spot in the First Division table, Burgh face Thorniewood United at Keanie Park this Saturday looking to pick up a crucial victory to stay in the hunt.

McKim paid tribute to new recruit Lee Mitchell who made a strong debut for the club having come in as cover for injured goalkeeper Glen Cameron.

McKim said: “Lee played for Neilston not long ago and I know he’s a very experienced keeper.

“He was a bit shaky at the start as he got to grips with the conditions but then he grew into the game well.

“He organised the back four very well, which was important as it wasn’t our regular line-up.

“He adjusted well and I know he’ll be a great addition going forward.

“It’s important we have an experienced option because this is a key part of the season and we saw what can happen when we don’t have that cover available.”
