Johnstone Burgh boss Jamie McKim demands more after 'criminal' defending leads to heavy defeat

Jamie McKim blasted his sleepy Burgh side’s defending in a 5-0 rout at the hands of Drumchapel United as “criminal”.

The Keanie Park club were hoping to bounce back from a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Shotts Bon Accord that all but ended their promotion hopes.

And on Saturday it went from bad to worse for the Renfrewshire side, with promotion-chasing Drumchapel slamming home five unanswered goals on an afternoon to forget for Burgh.

And fuming manager McKim is demanding more from his players and insists they won’t be allowed to let the end of the season end on a whimper.

McKim said: “It wasn’t good enough. In possession, out of possession, defensively, we weren’t good enough.

“I’m not trying to downplay how well Drumchapel played. I thought they were the better team by a fair distance.

“But to give goals away so easily is absolutely criminal.

“I’m looking for more from the players that are here at the moment. They need to be brave and get on the ball and create chances.

“Defensively I need players to have more pride in their defending. There was not enough pressure on the ball in our half and the reactions just weren’t good enough.

“It’s probably a fair result and we’re actually fortunate to get away with that.

“It needs to be so much more. The season isn’t done. I think some of the players have maybe forgotten that.

“Everybody here is playing for something and I’m not thinking about starting to build for next season yet.

“These last few games matter to me and the boys need to keep bringing their best and having pride in what they do. It just wasn’t acceptable.”

McKim was particularly disappointed with the result given it was long-serving coach Ryan Muldoon’s last game with the club.

The popular coach is emigrating to Canada, with McKim wishing him all the best as he begins a new life on the other side of the pond.

McKim said: “Ryan has been with me here since day one, and a couple of years before that too with Glenvale.

“I’ve worked with him for a long, long time and I’m sad to him go but obviously everybody at the club wishes him the very best and hopefully he has a happy life over there.

“For me, one of the biggest disappointments with that result is him finishing on that note. We should have done so much more for him on his last game to help him finish on a high.”

Burgh are back in action at Keanie Park this Saturday, with league leaders Gartcairn the visitors.
