Johnson, Spence, Wallace - Nottingham Forest transfer questions answered

Nottingham Forest have less than two weeks in which to complete their January transfer business.

And further incomings, as well as outgoings, are expected before the window closes on the 31st of this month.

The Reds were quick off the mark in getting three signings in, but there is plenty of talk about who might be coming and who might be leaving in the remainder of the window.

On top of that, Steve Cooper’s side are preparing for the East Midlands derby, with bitter enemies Derby County visiting the City Ground this weekend.

Forest reporter Sarah Clapson discussed all the latest goings-on in a Q&A on our Reds Facebook page.

Q: What’s the latest on Jed Wallace?

A: The fact he wasn’t included in Millwall’s squad on Saturday set a lot of tongues wagging. But he is injured - Gary Rowett said that after the game, and has reiterated that since, as some Millwall fans were speculating that Wallace had refused to play against the team trying to sign him.

Forest are still keen to get him, but their attempts have been rejected so far.

One report has suggested Milwall have put a £9m price tag on his head, which seems extreme. They’ll be lucky to get anywhere close to that. The bids Forest have made haven’t been anywhere near that kind of price, and I doubt any team would be willing to pay that much when he is out of contract in the summer.

It looks like being one which could take a little while to do, if Forest are going to get it over the line. There is still other interest in him.

The fact he’s injured at the minute doesn’t help matters.

And Millwall also seem keen to hang on to him. But they will be aware he could walk away for nothing at the end of the season.

Q: It’s been mentioned that a Brennan Johnson move could happen. What’s your opinion on this?

A: Brentford are really keen on him.

Forest have made it clear that they very much want to hang on to him and are not thinking about him leaving. Steve Cooper has said that several times on record, Brennan Johnson’s dad has said on Twitter that he’s not for sale, and Brennan has said himself that he’s happy at Forest.

But the caveat would be if a significant bid for him is made. That could change things.

As much as clubs can say someone isn’t for sale, it’s rare that a player doesn’t have a price.

What Forest could really do with getting sorted out is Johnson’s contract situation. That’s hanging over them amid all the transfer talk about him.

He’s got 18 months left. Talks stalled over a fresh one.

It would be better for Forest if they could get that tied up. That would put them in a better position if teams like Brentford continue to sniff around.

Q: I hear Spurs are going to bid on Djed Spence?

A: That performance he put in against Arsenal probably didn’t do Forest a lot of favours if they had hopes of doing anything beyond his loan. It has certainly put him in the spotlight.

There is interest in him from Premier League clubs and from clubs abroad. Quite a few have been keeping tabs on him.

It’s no surprise to see Arsenal linked - he tore them apart in the FA Cup, so they’ve had a first-hand look at what he can offer.

Brentford and Leeds have been mentioned, too, as well as Spurs.

When you’ve been putting in the kind of performances he has, it is understandable that teams begin to take notice. It’s inevitable, really.

Ultimately, he’s Middlesbrough’s player, so anything that happens is up to them.

What does count in Forest’s favour for the second half of the season is that Spence has already played for them and for Boro - and you can’t feature for three clubs in one season.

Any deal would involve him staying on loan at the City Ground until the summer.

But beyond that, it looks like they’d have a fight on their hands if they wanted to try to buy him.

For the moment, it’s a case of making the most of him while they can, then see what happens when the season finishes.

Hopefully all the speculation about his future isn’t a distraction, because he’s been such a key player. I’m sure Steve Cooper won’t allow any of the talk to get into his head.

Q: Would you bring Josh Bowler in?

A: Wallace and Bowler are the two that Forest are really targeting. Whether they manage to get either or both done… it’s a work in progress at the minute.

Forest have tried their luck, but haven’t been able to get anywhere so far. It’s another one which is likely to take a bit of doing.

Blackpool are keen to hang on to him.

He’d be a decent addition, I think. Forest are keen to have more attacking options - that’s what can really make a difference in trying to get into the top six. They want to score more goals, and they want to make sure they have sufficient strength in depth.

The business they have done so far has been really encouraging, which bodes well for the rest of the window.

Q: Is Max Lowe back in training?

A: He is making good progress and is getting closer to a comeback.

Steve Cooper said before the Millwall game that he could be back in training this week. We should get an update on that at his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

Forest are really happy with how he’s been doing in his recovery. They’re hopeful that it won’t be too long before he’s back.

It will be great when does return. He was in such good form before he got injured, and he seemed to really be enjoying getting regular game time.

Forest have a better balance about them when he’s on one side and Spence is on the other.

And his return would allow Jack Colback to move back into midfield, where he’s at his best.
