Film star Johnny Depp denied intimidating Amber Heard when he was secretly recorded pouring himself a “mega-pint of wine”, smashing kitchen cabinets and telling her: “You want to see crazy?”
The actress filmed her then-husband on her mobile phone when he angrily shouted “motherf*****” twice amid the sounds of a wall being struck and clattering crockery.
In the clip, Heard, 35, tells Depp: “Nothing happened this morning you know that” but he forcefully replies: “Were you in here, no, so then nothing happened to you this morning.”
The Aquaman star then says: “Yeah, you’re right. I just woke up and you were so sweet and nice. We were not even fighting this morning, all I did was say sorry.”
Depp, 58, is seen slamming cupboard doors to the sound of breaking glass, before pouring himself a large glass of red wine and telling Heard: “You want to see crazy, I’ll give you f***ing crazy. All your crazy.”
Heard points out an empty bottle of wine, asking if Depp has finished it that morning, and this is the moment he realises the camera is pointed at him.
Questioned on the incident which happened at his West Hollywood home, Depp says: “Clearly I was having a bad time. I don’t know what it was with regard to completely at this point since I don’t know the date.
“But being illegally recorded by your chosen other is quite fitting with the rest of the photographs and tape recordings she made. I felt what was most interesting was she tried to hide it from me and laughed and smiled at the end. I thought that was the most interesting part myself.”
He then added: “I did assault a couple of cabinets but I did not touch Miss Heard, as you can see I think.”
Depp accepts “there a possibility” that he was drunk and drew laughter in the Fairfax County courthouse when he mocked the use by Heard’s lawyer, J Benjamin Rottenborn, of the term “mega-pint”.
“A mega pint? I poured myself a large glass of wine. I thought it necessary,” replied Depp.
However it was then pointed out Depp himself had used the term during 2020 UK High Court proceedings, when he unsuccessfully sued The Sun for libel after being branded a “wife-beater”.
Mr Rottenborn asked the Pirates of the Caribbean star: “Would you agree the standards of a Southern gentleman are not in your mind in this particular moment?”
Depp replied: “I don’t know about anyone else but I’ve have had experiences where one does stray from complete control over their emotions at times, and that is a very normal, primal thing to do.
“I did not try to intimate Miss Heard. If she was intimidated, why was she filming? If she was scared to death why didn’t she leave?”
Depp is suing Heard for $50 million over a Washington Post op-ed piece about domestic violence, while she is countersuing for $100 million over his claims that she is lying about abuse in their volatile marriage.
On Thursday, Depp was questioned about photos and a series of recordings made during the relationship, including the sound of him moaning on the floor of an aeroplane toilet after a drugs binge and images of him passed out.
The jury also heard a recording of Depp threatening to cut himself with a knife, asking Heard to inflict a wound, and Heard telling him to stop.
In the clip, Depp tells her: “Cut me – I want your mark” and says: “Cut me. If you don’t I will.”
At one point, Heard pleads: “No, no, please don’t, you are going to hurt yourself. Please don’t cut yourself, please stop, please stop. Don’t hurt yourself.”
She tells him: “There’s love here, there’s love here. I have no other reason to be here”, and also is heard saying: “The knife is really dull, and it would be the worst thing in the world to use to cut me with. It would be too painful and dull and dirty to use.”
The trial continues.
