John Travolta leads celebrity tributes following Lisa Marie Presley's death aged 54

John Travolta said he was "so sorry" as he led the celebrity tributes to Lisa Marie Presley, who has died at the age of 54.

The only child of legendary singer Elvis Presley was rushed to hospital on Thursday after paramedics had performed CPR on the star following cardiac arrest at her house in Calabasas.

They were able to regain a pulse before transporting the 54-year-old to hospital, TMZ reported at the time. Lisa Marie was then put into an induced coma as medics desperately tried to save her.

However, despite efforts of hospital staff, her mother Priscilla Presley, 77, announced she had died shortly after.

In a short statement, Priscilla said: "It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us.

"She was the most passionate strong and loving woman I have ever known. We ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers. At this time there will be no further comment."

A host of celebrities took to social media to paid their respects to Lisa Marie.

Hollywood star John Travolta posted a photo of her, with the caption: "Lisa baby girl, I’m so sorry. I’ll miss you but I know I’ll see you again. My love and heart goes out to Riley, Priscilla, Harper and Finley."

Singer-songwriter Pink also shared a throwback photo of the pair, where Lisa Marie has her arm around the pop superstar. She wrote: "Oh, this one hurts my heart. Lisa Marie, you were one of a kind. Funny as s**t, smart as a whip, sensitive, talented, witty, mean, loving, generous, judgmental but always right, loyal, and you adored your children.

"My heart breaks for you and your beautiful family and your children. The world lost a rare gem today. May your soul rest in peace, friend."

Among those penning tributes on Twitter was singer Leann Rimes who wrote: "lisa marie presley… how heartbreaking. i hope she is at peace in her dad’s arms. my heart goes out to her family. too much grief in just a couple of years. #riplisamarie #LisaMariePresley."

Actor Cary Elwes, who co-wrote 2016 film Elvis & Nixon, reflected by saying: "Rest In Peace, Lisa Marie. A sweet and gentle soul. We send our deepest, heartfelt condolences to Priscilla, Riley and her family and friends. Heartbreakingly sad."
