Former Chelsea captain John Terry knows what it’s like to experience huge Champions League occasions at Stamford Bridge. He was a key figure in the Champions League-winning side of 2012, which saw them record a crucial 1-0 win against Barcelona in the semi-final, first-leg in west London, before securing their place in the final with a dramatic 2-2 draw at Camp Nou in the reverse fixture.
While the stakes are much lower for this evening’s match, a European clash under the lights has the power to stir emotions and create legends. Graham Potter’s side have work to do tonight, after they were beaten 1-0 in the first-leg on German soil.
In an effort to inspire the current crop of Chelsea players, Terry has taken to Instagram to issue the ultimate battle cry. “@championsleague nights at the Bridge @chelseafc,” Terry posted.

“Cold night with a little bit of zip on the grass. Unbelievable, we felt invincible at home with our supporters behind us, we have to be at it from minute one until the end.
“Get about these early tonight and set the tone of the game. Come on boys. Feel that Champions League music before the game.”
While the Blues come into this crunch clash in poor form, having scored just five goals in 2023, Potter’s outfit did record a must-needed victory against Leeds United on Saturday.
In what was previously deemed a “make or break” week for the manager, the former Brighton boss will be hoping to carry any sort or momentum into the biggest match of his relatively brief reign to date.
