JOHN Swinney has said Andy Murray is Scotland’s “greatest ever sportsman” as the tennis star announced his retirement.
The two-time Wimbledon champion took to Twitter/X on Tuesday morning to confirm the Paris Olympics would be his final tennis tournament.
He said he was “extremely proud” to have the chance to compete one final time.
Tributes to the tennis star and his illustrious career have been pouring in, including from the First Minister.
Writing on social media, Swinney said: “Our greatest ever sportsman. Heartfelt thanks to @andy_murray for an outstanding and inspiring career which has made a profound impact on so many.”
Murray won two Olympic gold medals in his career, in London in 2012 and in Rio in 2016.
Writing on social media, the official Team GB account said: “Andy Murray and Olympic tennis will always be an iconic pairing.
“We can’t wait to watch you take to the court once more at #Paris2024.”
Former SNP MP Jonna Cherry was also among those to pay tribute, saying: “What a credit Andy is to his country.
“He has made us all so very proud. I can’t wait to see what he does next, but I hope he has a fantastic run in the Olympics.”
Hundreds of people also commented on Murray’s own post on social media, with many wishing him the best of luck with whatever comes next while others described him as “inspirational” and congratulated him on a “phenomenal career”.

Andy Murray has a total of 46 career singles titles on the ATP Tour, including three grand slams – the 2012 US Open as well as Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016.
In total, he made 11 grand slam finals and spent 41 weeks at the top of the world rankings.
He took part in what many consider to be tennis’s greatest era as he competed against Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic (below).
Murray has a total of 29 combined wins against his three rivals.

According to the ATP’s official website, Murray has picked up a total of $64,677,584 in prize money across both singles and doubles titles in his career.
He also has a number of ventures outside of tennis as well however, and owns the luxury Cromlix Hotel in Dunblane along with his wife Kim Sears.
