John Ryan stings Munster Rugby with Wasps move

Veteran Munster prop John Ryan is leaving the province for Wasps at the end of the season.

The Ireland loosehead has played 190 times for the Reds and, having made his Test debut in 2016, was a member of the 2018 Grand Slam winning squad and went to the World Cup in 2019, making one appearance in Japan. He has 24 Ireland caps.

Ryan, 33, previously played in the Premiership - during a short loan stint with London Irish a decade ago.

“I am delighted to have signed with Wasps ahead of next season," said the Limerick man. "It’s an exciting challenge and one that me and my wife and kids are very much looking forward to.

“Wasps have a very exciting coaching team and playing squad. I hope I can add to their vision and goals over the coming years.”

Ryan has lined out 13 times for Munster this term and will be involved in Saturday's Heineken Champions Cup last 16 first leg tie against Exeter Chiefs. With Dave Kilcoyne a serious doubt, Ryan could be in line to start.

Wasps Men’s Head Coach Lee Blackett said: “We are very pleased to be bringing John to the Club for next season.

“He is a quality scrummager, who’s experience will be a significant asset for us in 2022/23.

“John has a huge amount of experience of being at the business end of competitions with Munster and Ireland.

“His desire to win things really grabbed my attention when we met with him. He is a real team player and will be a great bloke to have around the club next season.”

Munster are losing head coach Johann van Graan and defence coach JP Ferreira in the summer, with both heading to Bath, while second row Jason Jenkins is leaving for Munster and centre Damian de Allende has revealed he will be playing outside of Europe next term, with Japan his likely destination.

Van Graan is sweating over the fitness of Tadhg Beirne, Gavin Coombes and Kilcoyne, while Andrew Conway's knee injury looks to have scuppered his chances of involvement over the two legs.

The province is expected to provide a fitness update later today.
