John Lewis offers staff free meals to help with cost of living

The retail group behind John Lewis and Waitrose has announced it will be offering all staff and temporary workers free food over the festive period. The John Lewis Partnership (JLP) made the announcement as it revealed it was recruiting more than 10,000 temporary roles this Christmas to meet demand.

The JLP has pledged to offer free food to all of its 'partners' and temporary workers alike between October 3 this year and January 6, 2023, in a bid to help struggling workers deal with the deepening cost of living crisis. The partnership owns and operates both John Lewis department stores and Waitrose supermarkets.

Andrew Murphy, Chief Operations Officer at the John Lewis Partnership, said: “We pride ourselves on creating a happy workplace because it's our Partners who make the difference and it’s thanks to them that John Lewis and Waitrose are two of the UK’s best-loved brands.

"We are looking forward to welcoming people across the country to grow our team and ensure we deliver a great Christmas for our customers.”

The free food announcement to help staff members comes as the JLP announces it will be looking to fill over 10,000 temporary roles this Christmas at both John Lewis and Waitrose, as well as in the distribution network. These will include 4,000 seasonal roles across 331 Waitrose shops, including supermarket assistants, night shift workers and customer delivery drivers, as well as 2,000 temporary roles for 34 John Lewis stores, including sales and merchandising positions.

Anyone interested in the in-store positions can register their interest at jlpjobs.com/Christmas with jobs going live throughout September and October. A number of permanent roles throughout the Partnership are being advertised on the site too.
