The John Lewis Christmas advert has become synonymous with the build-up to the festive season and this year's 90-second commercial is all about raising awareness of children in care. The song, as always, is an important element to story and this year's cover is no different.
Titled 'The Beginner', the ad shows the story of a middle-aged man learning to skateboard before welcoming a young teenager into the family home. As always, the mini-story is set to a cover of a hit song, previous years have seen Oasis' Half The World Away and The Smith's Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want.
John Lewis said it understood that not all foster carers had the benefit of knowing who they would be looking after in advance and that its broader campaign also featured “authentic voices of carers” and “young people with different experiences of a complex care system”.

But it said that “in a challenging year, we felt it was important to demonstrate that it’s what we do that matters most”, adding it was proud to use its Christmas ad to “generate conversation and action around an often overlooked issue”.

What's the John Lewis Christmas advert song?
It's the brilliant, '90s pop-punk hit, All the Small Things by American trio Blink 182. Formed in 1992, All the Small Things was released in 1999 and reached number two in the UK charts. It was written by the band's Tom DeLonge about his high school girlfriend, then wife, Jennifer Jenkins. Recently the band have reformed and will play shows in the UK in summer 2023.
Who sings the cover version on the John Lewis ad?
US artist Mike Geier sings the cover and is a well-known performer over in the US, for singing cover versions while in character as clown, Puddles Pity Party. He often collaborates with musical act, Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox and their cover of All the Small Things can be found on YouTube., alongside many other covers from acts like Lorde, Twenty One Pilots and Taylor Swift.
Geier has also appeared on America's Got Talent, where he reached the quarterfinals, he's been on sitcom, The Conners and had a residency at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.
