In a recent interview, President Biden's top climate envoy, John Kerry, discussed the challenges faced during the high-stakes negotiations at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai. Kerry revealed that all 195 nations came to a consensus to transition away from fossil fuels, marking a significant milestone in the global fight against climate change.
Describing the negotiation process as tough, Kerry emphasized that multilateral governance is a formidable task, given the diverse economic interests and capabilities of participating countries. However, he expressed satisfaction that despite these complexities, all nations chose to unite and commit to a transition away from fossil fuels. The agreement calls for an acceleration of efforts in the 2020s leading to net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with the Paris Agreement's objective of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
