John Beaton Celtic no goal call branded incompetent as Chris Sutton says 'you don't know the rules'

Chris Sutton has accused referee John Beaton of "not understanding the laws" after he chopped off Celtic's second goal against Dundee United.

The Parkhead side scored early through Callum McGregor in the Scottish Cup tie and thought they had a second later in the first half when Daizen Maeda tapped home.

But play was pulled back for a perceived handball by Giorgos Giakoumakis with the home side given a free-kick.

Debate raged immediately over whether it was the correct decision and Premier Sports host Darrell Currie cited the IFAB handball rule that saw Dundee denied a penalty for a similar incident involving Jota last month.

Under the rule that was amended in the summer, goals should not be ruled out for accidental handball unless it's the offending player who scored.

In this case Giakoumakis didn't score himself following the incident and a furious Sutton believes Beaton made a mistake in pulling the play back.

You can read the full exchange below.

Currie: "I think the question for all of us is 'should this goal stand'?

"Under the laws of football that were changed in the summer to say that if a player has an accidental handball in the build up to the goal, so he's not the player who puts the ball into the back of the net, if it goes to a teammate who scores - the goal should stand."

Stewart: "You've just answered your question Darrell."

Currie: "I've just given you the laws, so how do you feel about this."

Stewart: "You've just explained it there. In the laws of the game, the fact that it comes off of Giakoumakis' hand and comes to Daizen Maeda to put the ball in the back of the net. The goal should stand. In the spirit of the game, it's a difficult one. I've not really got a view on it either way. "

Sutton: "Well that's unlike you Michael to not have a point of view on it..."

Stewart: "In the spirit of it because it comes off his hand and deflects to the player. These things can happen in a game. Under the laws of the game, that's unequivocal, that is a goal that John Beaton has disallowed and I can't really understand why he's disallowed that because there's no way that that is a deliberate handball from Giakoumakis.

"That is the only thing that John Beaton could've given that makes any sense other than not understanding the laws of the game."

Sutton: "He's the best player in the world, Giakoumakis, if he can kick the ball under his arm and deflect it in Maeda's path. You'd expect John Beaton to know the laws of the game. That's the bottom line and he clearly didn't."
