John Barrowman has detailed the 'carnage' as he was caught up in a horror car crash in Berlin. The former Doctor Who actor took to social media after witnessing the incident which has seen a car be driven into a crowd of people with at least one dead and 30 injured.
Berlin Police said around 130 emergency responders including an air ambulance unit are working at the scene, where they have secured a "small car". They added: "There are several injured, some seriously, and according to the current status, one dead person."
Nothing is yet known about the driver, but police have confirmed he is in custody. John, who witnessed the incident, shared a video of himself close to the scene on Twitter.
He then told his followers that "there’s a lot of people dead bodies all over the place we’ve seen a car that came down the road and ended up in a storefront covering three city blocks it’s pretty horrific."
He is then heard saying in the video: "It’s really pretty bad guys. Over where we are here, there’s a lot of police, a dead body in the middle of the road."
The former Dancing On Ice judge told how he was told to stand behind a tree, "just in case anything else happens because it’s something that’s between us and any other vehicles that may come."
John went on to describe what he saw, explaining: ‘If I’m pointing to you from the road, up there, the car came down onto the pavement, we had dinner in that restaurant last night, the car came down onto the pavement and has some onto the road over there, has hit somebody and then has gone down the road and has come back onto the pavement down that way, and come back onto the pavement and gone through a bunch of people, gone through the photograph I posted of a cafe and right into a storefront window."
He went on: "The police presence is unbelievable, they are clearing out the area but it was cordoned off, I heard the bang and the crash when I was in a store and we just saw the carnage. There are helicopters coming now to airlift people, so I’m gonna let you see this then I’ll get back to you."
In another clip, John explained he’d been moved "all the way down from the incident", with helicopters coming in to assist the injured. "This is bad… there are hundreds of emergency services in the area. They’re blocking off city block after city block off and keeps expanding. We’re being pushed back and out," he said.
John then added: "We’re trying to walk back, and I know a couple of the news media have been onto us – Sky News and ABC in America so we will get back to you."
Berlin police spokesman Martin Dams said the incident happened near the popular Kurfuerstendamm shopping boulevard in the west of the German capital, while Berlin police said on Twitter: "A man is believed to have driven into a group of people. It is not yet known whether it was an accident or a deliberate act."
Berlin fire service spokesman Stefan Salzwedel, who confirmed the casualty figures, was not immediately able to provide further information on the victims.
