John Barnes believes that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips would be the perfect fit for Liverpool but is not expecting him to move to Anfield. Phillips has long been linked with a number of the Premier League’s top sides following his form at Elland Road and with England.
The 26-year-old has established himself as one of the best holding midfield players in the country over recent seasons and played a key role in the Three Lions reaching the final of EURO 2020. However, Phillips has suffered with injury problems over the course of this campaign and has been absent for over three months following surgery on his hamstring.
Phillips’ long-term future will almost certainly depend on the division that Leeds are playing in next season as they continue their battle to beat the drop. The Whites are currently sat 16 th in the table and four points above the bottom three.
He has in recent months expressed his desire to extend his current deal in West Yorkshire, however with an international career also to think about, relegation to the Championship could put a halt to that. Speaking to BonusCodeBets, Barnes believes his style of play would slot seamlessly into the Liverpool midfield but isn’t sure whether he would want to leave Leeds.
He said: “Kalvin Phillips would suit Liverpool’s midfield. If you are a hardworking, strong midfield player who plays with high intensity – then you’ll suit Liverpool. If you’re more technical then you’d suit Manchester City [better]. He won’t necessarily sign for Liverpool because he’s at Leeds and is happy, but in terms of if he’d suit Liverpool – then absolutely!”
