Joelinton's impressive impact gives Newcastle boss Eddie Howe a Bruno Guimaraes selection dilemma

Eddie Howe's impact on Newcastle United has been nothing short of superb and he has steered the club from second bottom to four points clear of the relegation zone.

The Magpies secured their third successive win on Sunday with a 1-0 success over Aston Villa on Sunday after Kieran Trippier scored the only goal of the game at St James' Park.

This followed back-to-back victories against Leeds United and Everton and the Magpies are looking in a much better position compared to when Howe was appointed as the club's manager in November.

He has made a number of notable changes to the side - one of which has included moving Joelinton into a more deeper position - rather than as a central striker.

It's proved to be remarkable move and the Brazil international has turned into one of the Magpies' most important players with his pressing and energy in the middle of the park.

Howe, who replaced Steve Bruce in charge on Tyneside, has chosen to use Joelinton in a midfield two alongside Jonjo Shelvey, with Joe Willock often more advanced.

The trio have been integral to the Magpies' up turn in form in recent weeks and Joelinton has been key to holding the midfield together while also winning Man of the Match in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

However, Bruno Guimaraes' arrival has given Howe a huge dilemma ahead of the run-in and there has been some questions raised about who he would replace in the starting XI.

Guimaraes made the £33million switch from Lyon last month and has since made two substitute appearances, accumulating just 11 minutes of game time in the process.

Despite impressing in recent matches, Joelinton could be sacrificed for Guimaraes to come into the team but his impact suggests that it may be a very difficult dilemma for Howe to make in the coming weeks.

In actual fact, Joelinton has recorded the most combined tackles and interceptions out of the Other14 Premier League clubs in their team's last five games (35).

Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard is second on the list with 34, while Southampton's Mohammed Salisu (33), Watford's new left-back Samir (31) and Leicester City defender Luke Thomas (31) make up the top-five.

Newcastle team-mate Kieran Trippier, who has made quite the impact following his move from Atletico Madrid, is ninth having made 14 tackles and 10 interceptions during his time at the club.

This statistic proves how vital Joelinton has been since the stalemate at home to United in December and he has continued to perform at arguably the highest level of his career to date.

Joelinton also won three headers in the win over Villa and showed a different side to his game in the latter stages as his side battled to another vital three points which has extended the gap between them and 18th-place Norwich City.

Burnley and Watford also occupy the bottom three but Newcastle will be looking to make their position more comfortable with a win over West Ham United this weekend.
