Joelinton on World Cup dream as he hints at making Bruno Guimaraes Newcastle United boardroom request

Joelinton is hoping to fulfil a boyhood dream and pull on the yellow and green shirt of Brazil but knows the only way to do that is continue to play well for Newcastle United. The Brazilian was one of the standout performers for the Magpies after Eddie Howe's arrival.

The decision to drop him into a deeper role paid dividends as Newcastle kick started their bid for Premier League safety. The Magpies would finish just seven points behind the European places and there's plenty of hope ahead of next season.

The arrival of Bruno Guimaraes in January added some much needed quality to Howe's squad and his fellow Brazilian has joked about asking for further compatriots to help boost their bid for European football.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, Joelinton said: "Well, it's obviously a good thing to work with compatriots. There were no Brazilian players at Rapid Vienna and I was the only one at Newcastle for two and a half years until they brought in Bruno, so having him on board is definitely a positive for me.

"But the most important thing is his football quality - he's more important for Newcastle than for me. The guy is a great player and he showed it straight away.

"Bruno was crucial for us last season and hopefully he'll be more important in the next ones. If the board asks me, I will certainly suggest they sign more Brazilians."

When asked how quickly Bruno forgave him for ignoring his texts asking for advice about the club, Joelinton replied: "No, come on! The true story is that he sent me a message just saying he was coming to Newcastle.

"He wasn't asking for advice. But I missed it - I was travelling and didn't read his text straight away. I took a few days to get back to him, and then we met in Newcastle."

Joelinton's form last season prompted calls for him to be included in Tite's Brazil squad. With the World Cup on the horizon, it remains at the forefront of his aspirations.

Joelinton said: "Every player dreams of that, right? Representing your nation is the highest point of your career.

"It would be a huge honour to have the opportunity. But that'll only happen if I deliver great performances at Newcastle, so let's see what the future brings.

"I know that any chance is unlikely to happen ahead of the World Cup, but a team normally goes through a lot of changes after a competition like that. I just hope to be healthy and happy, putting in good displays for my team.

"That's the only way a player can earn the chance to wear the Brazil shirt.
