Joel Dommett has given eager fans a glimpse of the behind the scenes preparation for this year’s National Television Awards ceremony, which he will be hosting once again.
The comedian appeared on Tuesday morning’s instalment of This Morning to tease what viewers can expect when the awards ceremony airs later this week.
ITV postponed the National Television Awards last month as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The 27th annual prize ceremony will now take place on Thursday hosted by Joel at the OVO Arena Wembley in London, with the results broadcast live on ITV.
This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield sat down with the comedian to discuss the star-studded glittering night on the TV calendar, with the biggest names flocking to celebrate.
Holly noted Joel has to ‘hold it together’ and ‘stay focused’ while the TV stars around his enjoy the National Television Awards.
Joel replied: “I’m the ship-driver. I can’t drink. It’s kind of okay. You guys know – I love live TV. It’s so great all the things that happen in the moment.”
Phil asked what he can share on the show and Joel said it ‘feels bigger than last year’, with guests including Lewis Capaldi and Sam Ryder performing.
He added: “It’s some amazing people presenting awards who are really big.
“It’s the weird thing where I’m saying it out of my mouth in a script meeting and thinking, ‘I can’t believe they’re going to be here’. It’s mad.
“The line-up is incredible and it feels like we’ve got way more big moments than last year. Last year, there were all these rules and regulations coming out of Covid.”
Joel also spoke about his preparation for the awards ceremony, and shared that he goes through a dry run of his jokes with BGT stars Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly.
He explained: “They are such good laughers and they really concentrate, because they obviously understand it from your perspective.
“So every joke, I go to them and they do their little Geordie laugh.”
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
