Joe Schoen confirms that contract talks are unlikely during 2023 season

This past offseason, general manager Joe Schoen and the New York Giants front office were hard at work retaining their own players.

After failing to come to deals during the bye week last season with Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley, Schoen got new deals done for not only Jones and Barkley but also handed extensions to Dexter Lawrence and Andrew Thomas.

Negotiating deals during the season does not appear to be in the current plans for the Giants — a sentiment previously stated that remains consistent.

“Yeah,” Schoen told reporters when asked if negotiations will wait until after the season. “Unless something changes, I’ll never say ‘never,’ but as of right now that’s the plan.

“I won’t say we won’t do it, but we have nothing on the docket right now.”

This would mean no extension for safety Xavier McKinney prior to the offseason, who is entering the final year of his rookie deal and has arguably earned a new deal.

It would also mean no extension or reworked deal for defensive lineman Leonard Williams who has expressed his desire to stay with Big Blue long-term.

Luckily, the Giants were able to keep Williams despite carrying one of the biggest salary cap hits this season, which made him a cap casualty candidate entering the offseason.

Schoen has made it a priority for the Giants to keep their own players, so it will be interesting to see how he handles McKinney and Williams.
