Joe Mazzulla gives positive update on Robert Williams III, though return date still unclear

Boston Celtics center Robert Williams III has not yet suited up for the defending Eastern Conference champions this season, but he could be back sooner rather than later.

Williams underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee in September. Afterward, the team stated the big man would be sidelined 8-12 weeks.

Mid-November marks approximately eight weeks from his initial scope, though Williams received a follow-up injection in October. Ahead of Monday night’s tilt against the Thunder, Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla was asked about Williams and where he was at in the recovery process.

“No timetable has changed as far as where he’s at.” Mazzulla said.

“He’s doing good; he’s in great spirits mentally,” the Celtics interim coach added. “He’s doing a great job with his rehab. It’s great to see him out there and progressing well.”

A return closer to Christmas would still fit in the original estimate from the team. Williams has been practicing with the Celtics and staying close to the day-to-day action.
