Comedian Joe Lycett insisted he was thrilled when Liz Truss was named Prime Minister - but left fans in stitches because he had a funny way of showing it. In a statement outside Downing Street on Thursday, Truss said she cannot deliver the mandate she was elected on by Tory members and had told King Charles she was resigning.
She went on to say that she met with 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady - and they agreed there will be a leadership election within the next week, adding that she will remain as Prime Minister until a successor is chosen. In response, Joe, who has been openly critical of the Tory government, took the opportunity to share his thoughts on the UK's shortest-serving PM on Twitter.
Addressing Truss directly, he said: "OMG just heard there's a leadership election next week? You should run babe, you'd be perfect!"
His sarcastic display racked in almost 2,000 retweets in less than 15 minutes, with users commenting on how he'd make a better Prime Minister.
One user said: "I couldn't love you any more than I do now."
Another user added: "Thoughts and prayers for you, Joe, during this hard time."
While a third user said: "Love this! But to be fair, Joe you'd be much better," and one more user added: "Please don't say that, someone might read it to her and she will think it's compulsory."
A fifth user said: "You're so naughty but so good."
But this isn't the first time Joe has publicly questioned Truss' skills as he claims he left her with a 'face like a slapped a**e' after his BBC politics show appearance.
He pretended to be "right-wing" during an appearance on Laura Kuenssberg’s new Sunday morning programme last month.
After watching Laura interview the then prime ministerial candidate live in the studio, Joe could be heard shouting off-screen: "You smashed it, Liz!"
Following this, Joe appeared on Jeremy Vine's Channel 5 show to talk about being accused of 'mocking' Truss.
He told the presenter: "They say I am mocking Liz Truss, which is the complete opposite of what I'm doing. I'm a huge Liz Truss fan.
"She is the absolute best we're capable of. She's Thatcher 2.0.
"I'm nostalgic for Thatcher, I loved Thatcher - she got rid of those wokey miners, didn't she?
"Good job, Margaret! I'm thrilled to have Liz as PM. It's going to be a great time for this country and she is going to fix it!"
When asked if there should be jokes at such a serious time, he insisted: "I am very sincere."
Truss, who previously stated she hates comparisons with the late Mrs Thatcher, defeated former Chancellor Rishi Sunak in September, with 57 per cent of the vote to his 43 per cent.
When speaking about his thoughts on the Tory government, Joe told the BBC politics show: "I think the haters will say we’ve had 12 years of the Tories, and that we're sort of at the dregs of what they've got available, and that Liz Truss is sort of like the backwash of the available MPs.
"I wouldn’t say that, because I'm incredibly right wing, but some people might say that."
During the interview, unimpressed Laura asked him to be "serious", with the comic replying: "I’m not being sarcastic."
