Joe Gomez sent Liverpool transfer message despite 'fourth option' reality

Joe Gomez has been told it’s ‘not the moment’ to leave Liverpool by a former player.

The Reds centre-back has been the subject of tentative speculation over his future in recent months.

Suggestions have been made that Gomez could leave Anfield this month either on loan or, potentially, on a permanent deal.

Jurgen Klopp brushed off these suggestions when they were first brought to his attention last month, categorically ruling out a move away for Gomez.

Since then Gomez has continued to be linked with a move away from Liverpool, and a former Red has weighed in on the situation.

Ex-Liverpool defender Jose Enrique, who spent a season alongside Gomez on Merseyside, has explained why staying at Anfield is the best decision for centre-back right now.

Enrique went on to say that he doesn’t know why Gomez has fallen down the centre-back pecking order at Liverpool.

Virgil van Dijk have established themselves as the first-choice pairing, with summer signing Ibrahima Konate stepping up to become third choice, leaving Gomez as fourth.

“Gomez, for me, I think he should stay,” said Enrique, on Instagram . “At the moment, he is the fourth option.

“He is a good friend of mine. But I don’t know what is really going on with him to be the fourth option. When he was at his best, he was one of the starters with Van Dijk.

“Then he was fighting with that position with Joel Matip. I am not sure if he is 100% with his injury, but I don’t really have inside information. Even if I did I wouldn’t give it up because he is my friend.

“But I don’t think it’s the moment to let Joe Gomez go when he is our fourth option.”
