Reports of Joe Gomez’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.
Having experienced a season of frustration at Liverpool, the defender was given only a seventh start of the season in this FA Cup clash with Nottingham Forest.
“A good opportunity,” said Jurgen Klopp before the game. And Gomez was clearly intent on making the most of it.
While most certainly a centre-back by trade, here he was asked to fill the gap left by the hamstrung Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Gomez was game enough going forward, testing Forest goalkeeper Ethan Horvath in both halves and regularly offering himself as an overlap down the flank. The application matched the appetite.
The 24-year-old, though, is primarily a defender. And it was in helping quell dangerous Brennan Johnson – often when asked to go one-on-one with the Forest wide man – that he most impressed, even if there was one booking for one over-zealous challenge on his opponent.

Jurgen Klopp has spent seven FA Cup campaigns having his attitude questioned by the traditionalists, but he will surely not hear of it anymore after Liverpool booked their place in the semi-finals here in Nottingham.
Diogo Jota's late effort was enough to see a spirited fight from hosts Nottingham Forest and set up a second domestic cup semi-final of what is threatening to be a season that will never be forgotten.
Klopp's feelings towards this competition have often been probed with regards to how he views its overall importance in the grand scheme of a Liverpool season.
After all, it's been well over 15 years since 'the Steven Gerrard final' of 2006 and the Reds have never come close to winning this famous piece of silverware on the watch of their current manager.
But while his usually heavily-rotated sides had never been past the fifth round before kick-off, the Reds boss countered those claims with the identity of the teams who have beaten them since 2016.

'A cruel reminder' - National media reacts to Liverpool's FA Cup win and quadruple chances
Liverpool overcame a resilient Nottingham Forest side in the FA Cup quarter-final thanks to Diogo Jota's second-half goal proved to be the difference between the two sides.
Jota's finish set up a semi-final meeting with Man City in what is already looking like a jam-packed April fixture schedule for Jurgen Klopp's Reds. Home side Forest had chances of their own throughout the 90 minutes but failed find the back of the net as their brilliant cup run came to an end.
Liverpool are still on course to win an unprecedented quadruple this season having already clinched the Carabao Cup last month. With the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals to play next month and the Premier League winding down to a close, the Reds are 180 minutes away from winning their first FA Cup under Klopp.
