Joe Cole makes Chelsea January transfer window prediction as club director drops spending spree hint

Joe Cole has predicted Chelsea to be busy in the upcoming transfer window after club director David Barnard dropped an intriguing hint on the next couple of months. Graham Potter is set to make a number of signings in January as he looks to implement his philosophy at Stamford Bridge.

RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku, AC Milan forward Rafael Leao and Brighton talisman Leandro Trossard are among the several players who the Blues have recently been heavily linked with. The west Londoners were the biggest spenders in the Premier League in the summer, spending in the region of £270million on Raheem Sterling, Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

With Chelsea yet to show signs that the eye-watering investment has translated into performances on the pitch, Todd Boehly has been tipped to spend even more to steady the ship. Speaking to the Express, as quoted by the Metro, Cole claimed that the World Cup is the perfect chance to make signings.

"I think the work would have been done," the former Chelsea midfielder said. "There would have been processed but the clubs will go away for four weeks and they will be able to be meeting there'll be talks of agents and if there is availability.

"We may see more business in this window because of that because it’s actually more time to actually think about them and put the deals in place.

"Sometimes in January, things don’t happen because of just because simply because of time constraints," Cole added. "We may actually see the club trying to get more business but it’s certainly something to watch for. It’s an unusual time."

On Monday, November 7, Chelsea director David Barnard dropped a hint that Cole's prediction could become true when speaking at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland amid the Champions League round of 16 draw.

He said: "Dortmund is one team we are yet to play in the Champions League so we are looking forward to going there and, as I said, Man City were in their group this year so we hope to be talking to our fiends at City to get a little bit of insight into Dortmund from that point of view.

"There's an English expression 'there is a lot of water to flow under the bridge yet' between now and February," the Blues chief added. "We've got the World Cup, you've got the transfer window so I would say that when we do meet in February it will probably... may well be two different teams than if were to play tomorrow for example."
