Joe Burrow Not Yet Near Return From Injury, Bengals Coach Zac Taylor Says

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will be out beyond the next “several weeks” after suffering a right calf strain on July 28, coach Zac Taylor told reporters on Wednesday.

“The timeline [Burrow’s return] is several weeks from when I said several weeks,” Taylor said.

Burrow injured his right calf during one of the team’s training camp practice. The Cincinnati signal caller was scrambling out of the pocket on a play towards the end of the practice when he pulled up lame on the non-contact injury.

Following Cincinnati’s medical staff examining Burrow on the field, he was carted off the field. With Burrow out, Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning are handling the quarterback duties for the Bengals. The franchise also signed Reid Sinnett, who recently played for the XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas.

While it is unclear when Burrow will return, Bengals star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase recently stated that his quarterback “shouldn’t see the field“ during preseason or even Week 1, in order to rest his calf.

When Chase was asked about his comments on Sunday, the two-time Pro Bowler clarified and stood on his initial response.

“I just want him to be 100% healthy to play. I don’t want him rushing nothing, I don’t want people in his ear telling him to play at a certain time. I just want him to be healthy,” Chase said, per Jeremy Rauch of FOX-19 TV in Cincinnati.

The Bengals will open preseason action on Friday against the Packers.
