Joaquin Niemann Clinches Victory in Playoff at LIV Golf

Eugenio Chacharra of Fireballs GC hits his shot from a fairway bunker on the seventh hole during the second round of the LIV Golf Mayakoba at the El Camaleón Golf Course on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024 in P

Joaquin Niemann emerged as the victor in a thrilling playoff against Sergio Garcia at the LIV Golf Mayakoba tournament. The season-opening event took place in Playa del Carmen, Mexico and showcased a remarkable display of skill and determination from both players.

Niemann, a talented 25-year-old golfer from Chile, started the tournament on a high note by achieving a remarkable 12-under 59 in the opening round. However, his journey wasn't without its challenges. In the second round, Niemann was penalized for incorrectly taking relief from a cart path on the 13th hole, resulting in a two-stroke penalty. Despite this setback, he managed to maintain his composure and stay focused on his game.

Heading into the final round, Niemann held a two-shot lead over his closest competitor, Sergio Garcia. With a steady performance, Niemann closed with a 1-under 70, securing a tie with Garcia at 12-under 201 at El Camaleon. Garcia, a seasoned Spanish golfer, put up a strong fight by parrying the final three holes of regulation to force a playoff.

The playoff was an intense battle between the two golfers. Niemann had multiple opportunities to clinch victory on the par-4 18th hole but couldn't convert his putts. Finally, on the fourth playoff hole, as daylight waned, Niemann seized the moment. He sank an impressive 12-foot birdie putt from the fringe, illuminated by a large video screen, to secure his first LIV Golf title. The four-hole playoff turned out to be the longest in the history of the Saudi-funded league.

This recent victory adds to Niemann's growing list of achievements. In December of last year, he triumphed at the Australian Open in a playoff against Rikuya Hoshino, clinching the title with a dramatic eagle.

Amongst the notable players in the tournament was Jon Rahm, the reigning Masters champion, who made his debut in the LIV Golf league. While Rahm had a chance to contend for the title, he faltered in the closing holes, finishing tied for third at 10-under par. Despite the disappointing finish individually, Rahm played a crucial role in leading his team, Legion XIII, to victory in the team competition, with a four-stroke lead over Bryson DeChambeau-led Crushers GC.

In addition to Niemann and Garcia, several other prominent golfers showcased their skills in the tournament. Dean Burmester matched Rahm's score at 10-under par to join him in the tie for third place after a solid 70 in the final round. Defending champion Charles Howell III finished strong with a 68 and tied for fifth place at 8-under par alongside Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka.

With the conclusion of the LIV Golf Mayakoba tournament, attention now turns to the upcoming event in Las Vegas, set to commence on Thursday. The tournament promises more thrilling competition and compelling performances from the world's best golfers as they continue to captivate fans with their incredible talent and dedication to the sport.
