JK Rowling vows to attend book club of Scots fan who backed her over trans row

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has vowed to join a Scottish book club - set up by a fan who backed her over her trans views.

The writer has been targeted by trolls with countless death threats after airing her opinions on the issue on social media.

Book club organiser Woman for Women revealed she walked out on her reading club after butting heads with other members who had attacked JK Rowling during their meetings.

And she said she decided to start her own and name it after Rowling.

She Tweeted: "Just under a year ago I quit my book group after its members roundly attacked and smeared @jk_rowling.

"I set up another one instead. It's called JKR's Barmy Book Army.

"We are a small group of gender-critical women who read, talk, eat, and support each other.

"Today we're meeting to discuss @HJoyceGender 's Trans, and binge-watch Gentleman Jack, over a pot-luck lunch. #LadiesWhoLunch #RespectMySex #madangrycry "

Rowling, 56, then responded to the post: "I was just thinking, 'I really fancy dropping in on a random book group that might not even be in my city, of which I don't know the time or date, yet is maybe called something like JKR's Barmy Book Army.'

"You know how these random thoughts occur sometimes, mid-chapter.

"Anyway, if a DM should happen to drop into my messages with these unknown details, I may have to consider it a sign."

Minutes later she followed up with: "There has been a sign. I can't ignore the promptings of fate. To the Barmy Book Army I shall go."

Woman for Women and Rowling's Tweets were then liked thousands of times, prompting Woman for Women to say: "Thank you all so much for your support. I’m about to go meet my #LadiesWhoLunch to eat spanakopita and dissect @HJoyceGender.

"I’ve had a lot of requests for similar book clubs and am mulling over the options. Watch this space for a Barmy Book Club announcement…"

Earlier this month we told how Rowling said she had so many death threats over her comments on the trans issue she "can't give a shout-out" to all her potential murderers.

Rowling highlighted a video by Dr David Bell, the psychiatrist behind a critical report on the gender identity unit at an NHS trust on the efforts to silence him and his concerns about children's access to treatment.

She tweeted: “Me – shares video of experienced psychiatrist who turned whistle-blower, expressing his deep concern at high numbers of autistic children and children with internalised homophobia presenting at gender clinics.

“Them – (She then tagged a reply claiming she was a ‘repulsive bigot. Go f*** yourself, transphobic trash’.)

Rowling added: “I’m afraid I can’t give a shout-out to everyone promising to murder me – there are so many of you and I’m a busy woman – but this one deserves a mention for the nineties rave vibe, @TrustFundOzu.
