Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is set to join Gareth Southgate’s England coaching staff as the replacement for Chris Powell, who has decided to step down from his position.

Hassselbaink enjoyed a glittering playing career, winning 23 caps for the Netherlands and representing a clutch of British clubs, including Leeds and Chelsea. Since his retirement, he has made strides as a coach and manager, taking charge of Royal Antwerp, Burton Albion (twice), QPR and Northampton. His most recent role was at Burton, which he left last September.

The 50-year-old is looking forward to linking up with Southgate for the Euro 2024 campaign, which England kick-off with ties against Italy in Naples next Thursday and Ukraine at Wembley three days later.

Southgate names his squad on Thursday afternoon, which is expected to be similar to the one he took to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar last December. Fikayo Tomori is hopeful of a recall while Ben White, who left the camp in Qatar for personal reasons, is not expected to be selected.

Powell, 53, was a popular member of Southgate’s staff in Qatar and at the European Championship in the summer of 2021, when England reached the final. He is the head of coaching at the Tottenham academy.
