Former President Jimmy Carter died Sunday at his home in Georgia at the age of 100.
Roll Call delves into its photo archive to remember the 39th president’s time in the public spotlight.
From movies like Frost-Nixon to Oliver Stone's Nixon, the intrigue of the controversial presidency and life of Richard Nixon has captured many Americans. In this photograph are five U.S. Presidents and First Ladies: (from left to right) William J. Clinton and Hillary R. Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush, Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan, Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter, and Gerald R. Ford and Betty Ford. The five Presidents and First Ladies were attending the funeral ceremony of former President Richard Nixon, who died on 22 April 1994 in New York City. Before his death, it was the second time in history where there were six living U.S. Presidents, the most there has ever been at any given point. The earlier example occurred between the Inauguration of Abraham Lincoln in March of 1861 and the death of John Tyler in 1862, with Presidents Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, James Buchannan, and Abraham Lincoln all living at the same time. .From left to right: Bill and Hillary Clinton, George H.W. and Barbara Bush, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, and Gerald R. and Betty Ford attend the funeral ceremony of former President Richard Nixon in 1994.
