Jim Goodwin has survived the managerial axe after Dave Cormack gave the Aberdeen boss time to turn the club’s fortunes around.
The Irishman looked certain for the sack after West of Scotland junior side Darvel dumped the Dons out the Scottish Cup at the fourth round stage on Monday night. Since the World Cup break Goodwin’s men have picked up only one win in the their last nine games and dropped further behind Hearts in the race for third place in the Premiership.
Cormack and the board met to discuss Goodwin’s future on Wednesday afternoon and have decided to stick with the 41-year-old. With no standout candidate and the board have decided to continue with Goodwin. The Pittodrie boss was under pressure following a 5-0 hammering at the hands of Hearts last midweek and a litany of appalling results. He has been told he will be in the dugout for the Hibs game at the weekend.
In a statement, Cormack said: “We all recognise that Monday’s disastrous result in the Scottish Cup was totally unacceptable. It added insult to injury after such a poor result against Hearts, following what was a strong performance in the semi-final against Rangers at Hampden.
“The football monitoring board, comprising Stewart Milne, Willie Garner, Steven Gunn and me, have now had a full and frank meeting with Jim. It wasn’t an easy conversation, but necessary after the overall poor results since the World Cup break.
“From our wider discussions over the last two days, we believe that the senior players and the squad are behind the manager. Combined with our discussions at today’s meeting, Jim will be in the dug-out on Saturday. However, to be clear, Jim has been left in no doubt that the Board and the fans are seeking an immediate response from him and the players.”
