Jim Goodwin given Aberdeen green light by St Mirren as Irishman skips Paisley press conference duties

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin is in talks with Aberdeen after a compensation package was thrashed out – and will not take Friday's press conference.

The Irishman is Dave Cormack 's top target to replace Stephen Glass and he is homing in on landing his man.

As revealed by Record Sport the Dons would be prepared to pay Goodwin's £250,000 release clause to get their man and it a deal is moving closer.

Aberdeen announced on social media: "The club confirms it has been given permission by St Mirren FC to talk to its manager, Jim Goodwin, regarding the vacant managerial position.

"We will make a formal announcement when the process to secure a new manager is complete."

The St Mirren boss was due to address the media at 1.15pm on Friday ahead of the weekend clash with Livingston."

However the briefing will now be held an hour later with coach Jamie Langfield speaking to reporters.

Provided there are no last-minute hitches, the former defender should be announced in the coming hours.

Aberdeen had narrowed the list down to Goodwin and Jack Ross, having been rebuffed in an ambitious move for Kjetil Knutsen of Bodo/Glimt.

The twiice Norwegian champion took his side to Celtic Park in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night and won 3-1, having previously declined the opportunity to speak to Dave Cormack about the vacancy.
