Jim Carrey 'sickened' by the standing ovation for Will Smith after Chris Rock Oscars attack

The drama of the Oscars will take weeks to fade away and the dust is only just beginning to settle on the shocking events that took place during the prestigious awards show. Many stars in attendance that evening were reluctant to comment on the incident at the 94th Annual Academy Awards show in which actor Will Smith marched onto the prestigious gilded stage and slapped Chris Rock (pretty hard) in the face after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith's hair.

After the ceremony, several movie stars declined to comment on the events, walking past journalists on the red carpet or saying that they were out of their seats and in the bathroom at the time, missing the spectacle entirely. With the exception of Liam Payne from One Direction who gave a gushing tribute to Smith (and also bizarrely seemed to be launching a brand new accent, but that's another story).

However, one Hollywood titan has not been afraid to air his views. Movie star Jim Carrey appeared via video link on the American morning TV show, CBS Breakfast, and gave a scathing review of the events.

Speaking to presenter Gayle King who asked him how he felt about the incident and Will Smith going on to win applause for his Oscar win, he said: "I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse. It's really a clear indication that we're not the cool club anymore."

Rock has decided not to file charges against Smith but Carrey says would have felt differently had he been in the comedian's shoes. He said: "I'd have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200million. That video is going to be there forever. It came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him and I wish him the best, I don't have anything against Will Smith, but that was not a good moment."

He also condemned the actor for spoiling the moment for many other people: "A lot of people worked hard to get to that place and have their moment in the sun, and it cast a pall over the whole thing."
