Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein has announced Rudolph “Butch” Ware as her vice presidential selection at the party’s convention on Friday. Stein, who is the presumptive Green Party nominee, made the announcement during the party’s virtual convention, a day before she is set to formally accept the party’s nomination for president.
Stein explained that she chose Ware, an activist and professor at the University of California-Santa Barbara specializing in African and Muslim diaspora, because she wanted someone who could support her criticisms of Israel’s war in Gaza. She emphasized the importance of having a leading voice directly connected with the issue of genocide.
Despite only meeting Ware earlier in the week, Stein expressed confidence in her decision after conducting a thorough search for candidates who align with her campaign’s core message. The two engaged in a live-streamed interview on Instagram on Monday, where they discussed their shared views on various topics.
Ware, a Muslim scholar, has been vocal in his criticism of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza through social media posts and interviews. He has also taken aim at President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their support of Israel’s efforts in the region.
