Althea, a Jewish student at Columbia University, has spoken out about the harassment she has faced as part of the pro-Palestinian movement on campus. She wears a Star of David necklace along with a keffiyeh, a symbol of Palestinian identity, and identifies as a Mizrahi Jew with roots in the Middle East.
Althea expressed that she has been unjustly labeled as a terrorist, Jew hater, and enemy of her own people, despite her belief that Judaism and Palestinian liberation are interconnected. She emphasized the importance of combating both anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.
Regarding the presence of the NYPD on campus, Althea voiced concerns, stating that it poses a significant threat. Her awareness of Palestinian rights was heightened after visiting Israel last year through a trip organized by the campus Hillel. She described witnessing stark disparities between an Israeli town and a neighboring Palestinian village, noting the lack of resources and basic amenities in the latter.
The encampment at Columbia reflects inclusivity by observing Muslim daily prayers and hosting a Seder for the Jewish holiday of Passover. Althea highlighted the positive experience of participating in the Seder alongside Palestinian and Muslim students who were warmly welcomed.
