A Jewish student at Columbia University, Parker De Dekér, expressed his concerns regarding the threats against him and other Jewish students on Wednesday. De Dekér described the situation as feeling like a betrayal, emphasizing the long history of marginalization that Jewish populations have faced.
De Dekér highlighted the desire of Jewish students to advocate for peace in the Middle East, emphasizing the importance of a ceasefire and the release of hostages. He expressed frustration at the politicization of Jewish identities in the ongoing conflict, stating that their stories should not be weaponized for political gain.
While supporting the right of students to speak out on Middle East issues, De Dekér cautioned against the blurring of lines between peaceful and violent protests. He called for a clear distinction to be made and urged for bipartisan solutions to combat antisemitism and other forms of hatred.
During a meeting with House Speaker Mike Johnson on campus, De Dekér emphasized the need for understanding that antisemitism is a serious issue affecting Jewish safety. He urged for more accountability and transparency from universities in addressing such concerns.
De Dekér also advised against calls for the university's president to resign, citing potential turmoil that could arise. Instead, he advocated for increased accountability measures within the university system.
