Released Bristol Bears duo Jac Lloyd and Martin Mulhall have headed straight down under to play for an Australian club this summer having been released by the Premiership outfit at the end of the 2022/23 season.
Neither fly-half Lloyd or prop Mulhall were given much game time during the English rugby season but are earning valuable minutes playing in the Shute Shield for Sydney University and Warringah respectively. The Shute Shield celebrates’ its 100th year of running this season and is considered the premier club competition, below Super Rugby, in the New South Wales region of Australia.
Loosehead prop Mulhall joined Bristol from Swansea University last summer having impressed in BUCS Super Rugby and represented Ireland Students but he failed to make his senior debut for the Bears however he is impressing down under, being named in the team of the week across the league after a tryscoring display in which he demonstrated some dominant scrummaging.
Twenty-year-old Welsh U20s international Lloyd, the younger brother of Welsh international Ioan Lloyd who has also left the West Country club this summer to join United Rugby Championship side the Scarlets, made just three senior appearances for Bristol having come through the academy.
Lloyd has linked back up with former Bears scrum-half Theo Strang who is the starting nine at Sydney Uni. The Welshman is currently one of the highest points scorers in the competition with the best kicking percentage of the league, averaging above 90 percent.
The future destination of both players is currently unknown beyond September when the Shute Shield comes to a conclusion.
