Jets snap counts: Breakdown from Week 8 vs. Giants

Injuries certainly plagued the New York Jets against the New York Giants, causing a shorter rotation on the defensive line and a practice-squad elevation being thrust in at center. Here, we’ll take a look at the snap counts on each side of the ball and how it may have affected the Jets.

Offense

  • Injuries to Connor McGovern and Wes Schweitzer, who are now both are injured reserve, forced Xavier Newman into action at both right guard and center. He played 35 more snaps Sunday with the Jets than he did with the Titans earlier this season. The injuries also meant Billy Turner saw action at right guard while Newman was at center.
  • The Jets continue to focus, as they should, on a Breece Hall in the backfield while Dalvin Cook continues seeing a diminished role on offense. With the Jets not trading Cook, we’ll see if they stay status quo with him going forward.
  • Despite Randall Cobb being inactive, only Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard played more than 50% of the snaps Sunday. The Jets played more multi-tight end sets as a result. Xavier Gipson played only 25% of the snaps, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get more action on offense.

Defense

  • The Jets have seemingly rotated one of their defensive ends to be inactive each week and this time it was Carl Lawson, who was also potentially on the trade block but the Jets stood pat. All the ends saw at least a third of the snaps…except Will McDonald, who only played eight snaps.
  • Al Woods suffered his Achilles injury fairly early in the game, so the Jets had three true defensive tackles for most of the game. Unsurprisingly, it was Quinnen Williams and Quinton Jefferson leading the way while Solomon Thomas saw about a third of the defensive snaps.
  • The Jets were certainly happy to get their cornerbacks back in the lineup. Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed played every snap, as did the rest of the starting secondary and linebacker C.J. Mosley — Quincy Williams played all but two snaps. Michael Carter saw his usual mix at nickel and only Brandin Echols saw the field among the other corners and he played two snaps.
