Jet2 has become the first airline in the UK to drop the requirement to wear face coverings on board - except for customers flying to and from Scotland.
The budget airline announced the change following the decision by England and Northern Ireland governments to remove the law on mask wearing as they emerge from the Covid pandemic.
Travellers have been recommended to continue wearing them, and they must check the rules in the country they are flying to.
But Jet2 passengers flying out from Scotland will still be required to wear a face covering on board under the current Scottish Government rules in place.
Jet2 confirmed that you must still wear a face mask at Scottish airports.
A notice on the Jet2 website for flights from England and Northern Ireland reads: “It’s no longer a legal requirement to wear a face mask at our airports or onboard our planes.
“However, as per UK Government guidance, we recommend that you continue to wear a face mask in these spaces, and you will need to wear one when you get to your overseas destination.”
It adds for Scotland: “It’s still a legal requirement for everyone aged six years and over to wear a face mask at our Scottish airports and onboard out planes travelling to and from those airports.
“This is the case if you’re fully vaccinated.”
Scots travellers that are unable to wear a face covering have been urged to let Jet2 know in advance of their travel.
They should also provide proof of their exemption to the ‘Special Assistance’ team on 0800 408 5591 so they can authorise your travel.
“We’ll ask you for specific medical evidence to confirm this, as we don’t accept downloaded exemption cards or lanyards as proof of exemption”, the Jet2 guidance continues.
“And if you fail to wear a face mask without our agreement, you’ll not be allowed to board your flight.”
It is likely that the rules on face covering while on board Jet2 flights leaving from Scotland will change from March 21.
The Scottish Government last week announced that the legal requirement for Scots to wear a face covering in indoor and transport settings will move from law to guidance from then.
Businesses, such as bars and restaurants, will no longer be required to take customer details for contact tracing purposes from March 21 as well.
The Covid vaccine passport scheme was dropped in Scotland earlier this week.
Jet2 has been approached for comment on the future of face covering rules on board flights leaving from Scotland.
