The Northern Lights may be visible more often off the Northumberland coast, but many travel to Scandinavia and Iceland for the best chance of seeing the aurora.
And one airline is already selling flights to "bucket list destination" Iceland for winter 2024/25. Jet2.com and Jet2City Breaks say they have seen strong demand for travel to Iceland from Newcastle Airport and have put their programme on sale the earliest that they ever have.
The news follows TUI's announcement late last week that it would launch flights to Lapland from Newcastle Airport for winter 2024. Jet2's flights will fly between Newcastle and Keflavík International Airport on Wednesdays and Sundays from October 2 - November 16 2024 and February 16 - April 2 2025.

Known for its natural wonders such as the Golden Circle, a 190km circular road trip which takes in Gulfoss Waterfall, the Geysir area and the Þingvellir National Park; the Northern Lights; and the geothermal pools at the Blue Lagoon, Iceland has grown in popularity with UK tourists in recent years.
Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: "Iceland is a destination that has continued to see strong demand due to its many stunning natural wonders, so we are delighted to be launching our Iceland programme for Winter 24/25 from Newcastle International Airport.
"As a result of this strong demand and the number of customers looking to book their break nice and early, the programme has been put on sale earlier than ever. The beauty of Iceland, coupled with the fantastic benefits available through Jet2.com and Jet2CityBreaks, means we are looking ahead to a very busy programme next winter."
