Jet2 becomes first airline to drop requirement to wear face masks on flights

Jet2 passengers will no longer be required to wear face masks on flights after the airline became the first major carrier to scrap the rule.

The budget airline announced the rule change on its website yesterday, stating that masks will no longer be mandatory on its flights from England and Northern Ireland.

The announcement follows the cancellation of all Coronavirus regulations by the Government, including the need to wear masks on public transport.

Passengers will still be required to wear a mask after they land if required to do so by local laws, but they are free not to wear face coverings when boarding and in-flight, The Mirror reports.

However, Jet2 is still advising customers to wear a mask.

A Jet2 spokesperson said: "It is no longer a legal requirement to wear a face mask in England and Northern Ireland, including at our airports or on board our aircraft.

"However, as per UK Government guidance, we recommend that customers continue to wear a face mask in these spaces, and we remind customers that they will need to wear one when they get to their overseas destination."

These rules will only apply to England and Northern Ireland. Passengers aged six or over will still have to wear masks on flights travelling from Scotland and Wales.

The airline, which has a base at Newcastle Airport, has seen a surge in bookings after the relaxation of Coronavirus rules and has added more flights from Newcastle to Spain and Portugal from this month.
