A jet stream heading towards Ireland is set to "fire up some storms" in the Atlantic.
Met Eireann has forecast conditions to take a turn on Thursday as wet and windy weather arrives.
A forecaster said: "Jet stream heading towards us later in the coming week and will fire up some storms in the Atlantic. A lot of uncertainty around the details but a risk of spells of wet and windy weather around Thursday and Friday."
Experts have pinpointed the west to see the worst of the conditions as areas could experience a "month's worth" of rainfall this week.
Meanwhile, tonight will be dry with some clear spells but turning somewhat cloudier to the west and north overnight.
A chilly and mainly calm night with lowest temperatures of 2 to 7 degrees, coldest in the southeast.
Tuesday will be mainly dry, with the best of any bright spells in Leinster and east Munster. Cloudier to the west and north with a few spots of drizzle.
Rain will develop in the west and northwest coastal counties in the evening. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees with light to moderate southerly winds, freshening later.
A dull start on Wednesday with scattered outbreaks of rain, clearing eastwards through the late morning.
There may be a shower or two in the afternoon, but many places will be dry and bright for the rest of the day. Highest temperatures of 13 to 15 degrees with light westerly breezes.
Dry and mostly clear with light southerly winds overnight. However, it may turn cloudier with a chance of rain developing in the south by morning. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees.
After a dry start on Thursday, it will likely turn cloudy with rain developing, potentially heavy. The timing of the rainfall is uncertain.
Becoming breezier in a strengthening southerly airflow. Highs of 13 to 15 degrees. Winds will veer westerly as rain clears to showers later.
Friday is expected to be very breezy, with widespread showers and possibly longer spells of rain in parts.
Potentially windy, with strong winds possible in the north. Feeling cold in highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees.
The weekend looks set to be unsettled in breezy or windy weather with frequent showers or longer spells of rain at times.
Feeling cold with temperatures a little below the norm.
