The Savant, a thriller series by Jessica Chastain that was pulled from Apple TV’s schedule days before its premiere last year following the assassination of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk, will finally be released in spring 2027.
The eight-part limited series was due to premiere in September last year, but Apple TV postponed its release three days before.
According to Deadline, the streamer is now scheduling the series for release in spring next year.
The Savant follows an undercover investigator played by Chastain who infiltrates online hate groups in an attempt to identify domestic extremists and stop them before they carry out acts of violence.
It was inspired by a 2019 Cosmopolitan profile by Andrea Stanley of a real-life undercover investigator who worked inside online extremist communities.
The series also stars Nnamdi Asomugha, Cole Doman, Jordana Spiro, Trinity Lee Shirley, and Toussaint Francois Battiste, with Pablo Schreiber appearing as a guest star.
Kirk, a 31-year-old activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated on 10 September 2025 while speaking at an Utah Valley University event.
The Savant was due to premiere 16 days later, but Apple TV announced on 23 September that it was postponing the series.
The streamer didn’t explicitly cite Kirk’s death as the reason. “After careful consideration, we have made the decision to postpone The Savant. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to releasing the series at a future date,” it said in a statement at the time.
Concerns about the show’s subject matter and imagery, including a sniper attack, were cited in reports as a likely reason for the schedule change so soon after Kirk’s assassination.
Chastain, who is also executive producer of the series, publicly disagreed with the decision. “I’ve never shied away from difficult subjects, and while I wish this show wasn’t so relevant, unfortunately it is. The Savant is about the heroes who work every day to stop violence before it happens, and honouring their courage feels more urgent than ever,” she said.
“While I respect Apple’s decision to pause the release for now, I remain hopeful the show will reach audiences soon. Until then, I’m wishing safety and strength for everyone, and I’ll let you know if and when The Savant is released.”
In April this year, Chastain confirmed that the series would be released. “Before it was like, ‘I don’t know if we’re going to see it,’” she told Variety at the Breakthrough Prize ceremony. “But now I can say, ‘We’re going to see it.’”
At the time, it was reported that Apple was planning to release The Savant in July. Now it appears it will finally arrive more than 18 months after its planned debut.
