Jessica Biel Brings Backless Double Denim to Comic-Con on Her First Movie Press Tour in Nine Years

Jessica Biel's outfit at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25 was built around one construction choice: an open back. Entertainment Now described the sleeveless denim top she wore as cut with a back cutout, trading the coverage of a standard denim vest for a panel of exposed skin framed by structured denim on either side. (Hello Magazine's report on the same outfit described the top's cutout detailing at the waist rather than the back — the two accounts differ on exactly where the cutout sits, and this piece follows Entertainment Now's more specific description.) Either way, it's a detail that changes the read of the piece — rather than sitting like outerwear, the top functions more like a fitted bodice, with the denim doing the work of holding its shape while the cutout keeps the silhouette from feeling boxy or overly casual.

Below it, Biel wore wide-leg jeans in a matching wash, which is the piece doing most of the outfit's proportion work. Wide-leg denim reads as relaxed on its own, but pairing it with a fitted, structured top — rather than another loose piece — kept the overall shape from collapsing into pure slouch. The result sits closer to a tailored two-piece than to a typical denim-on-denim pairing: matched tone, considered cut, and a top-to-bottom proportion that goes fitted-to-full rather than loose-to-loose. Nude, pointed-toe shoes elongated the leg line without pulling focus from the denim, and her hair was worn in soft waves with a center part — a straightforward styling choice, not a new haircut, despite some chatter suggesting otherwise. What's circulating about a shorter, chin-length cut appears tied to her character in "Matchbox," not to any real-life change to her hair.

Double denim has a long history of reading as either a deliberate statement or an accidental misstep, and the difference usually comes down to exactly this kind of control: matching the wash precisely, choosing structured pieces over two loose ones, and treating the pairing as a single coordinated outfit rather than a top and jeans that happen to both be denim. Biel's version leans into that discipline. The open-back detail in particular adds a bit of unexpected polish more associated with eveningwear than with denim separates.

It's also a practical choice for a Comic-Con press line specifically. The venue mixes daylight photo calls, indoor panel stages, and a schedule that runs for hours, and a fitted top with breathing room in the back is more wearable across that stretch than a heavier, fully covered piece would be. Denim also reads as approachable rather than formal, which suits a comic and pop-culture convention without drifting into costume territory the way a more elaborate red-carpet look might.

Biel wore the outfit while promoting "Matchbox," an Apple TV action-adventure film co-starring John Cena, whose trailer debuted at the convention that day. Reports have described the appearance as her first movie press tour in nine years, following a stretch spent largely in television work since her last theatrical film release. The outfit choice fits that context: rather than a formal reintroduction, it reads as a relaxed but clearly considered return to the press circuit, denim-forward and low on obvious effort while still being carefully put together.
