Jesse Marsch's strong 49ers declaration attempts to curb lingering Leeds United suspicion

Leeds United are currently owned by Andrea Radrizzani's Aser Ventures and NFL franchise San Francisco 49ers' holding company, 49ers Enterprises.

The shares between both parties are split 56:44 in Radrizzani's favour, however the Italian has gradually relinquished more and more control over the past few seasons.

Sitting on the Leeds United board is Vice President Paraag Marathe, a paragon of the 49ers' success over the past two decades.

The relationship between the two sporting entities is now intrinsically linked, after the American company upped their stake in the West Yorkshire club from 37% to 44% earlier this season.

There has been speculation that Radrizzani will eventually make way, ceding enough of his shares to hand majority ownership to the US side.

A January 2024 break point has been mooted, and denied by Radrizzani, but all signs point towards a buyout in the near future.

The installation of an American head coach following the departure of Marcelo Bielsa, and reported bids for USMNT international Brenden Aaronson in the January transfer window has led to an increasingly pronounced sense that Leeds could soon be awash with a certain Stateside theme.

Jesse Marsch referenced his nationality and background on a couple of occasions during his unveiling as Leeds United head coach on Thursday afternoon.

The 48-year-old conceded that there probably was a stigma towards American coaches in England and Europe, with former mentor Bob Bradley struggling to leave his mark on the Premier League with Swansea City some years ago.

Towards the end of his 45-minute briefing with local and national media, Marsch was keen to stress his reason for taking the Leeds United job was not one overtly linked to the 49ers' involvement.

"I want to make it clear with [regards to] the 49ers, I met them, they're incredibly intelligent people, they're very clear in terms of what has made them successful in terms of strategies and how to manage organisations, and I think there's a lot to be learned from them, the Wisconsin native said.

"But I also want to make it clear, that's not the main reason I'm here. To say there's an Americanisation of this club would be inaccurate."

The Leeds United job is Marsch's first major coaching role outside of energy drink giant Red Bull's sphere of influence.

He has previously managed New York Red Bulls, FC Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leizpig - all of which fall under Dietrich Mateschitz's 'Bulls' umbrella.

Director of Football Victor Orta is an admirer of the scouting model Red Bull clubs operate under, and has shared a close relationship with Marsch over several years.

Marsch referenced the Spaniard as a component in his decision to take on the Leeds role.

"I certainly know that with somebody like Victor Orta, someone with his expertise, his communication style, his ability to help build a roster and a squad and a club in a really good way is really impressive. We will have a really close, strong relationship as time goes on.

"I didn't want Marcelo to have to go out like this," Marsch added. "I wanted to see him continue and to finish his legacy, keep the team up.

"I wanted to make that argument with Victor when he called me, but I could see the group was suffering.

"In the end, I'm committed to being here no matter the situation because I believe in it so much," Marsch stated, stressing his belief in the project Leeds are building in the Premier League.
