Jesse Marsch must trust Leeds United to protect their Raphinha future while he salvages the present

Transfers and the Leeds United fates of Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha are a long way down Jesse Marsch’s list of priorities in his fight to keep this club up in the here and now. After the weekend speculation around Phillips, fresh reports emerged in the Spanish press this week about Barcelona making Raphinha their first-choice target for the summer.

The Whites head coach is also not naive enough to believe their fates are neither important nor any of his concern amid the tactical planning for coming matches. While Marsch admits he is yet to have those long-term-future conversations with either Phillips or Raphinha, he wants to help the likes of Victor Orta, if he feels the director of football needs his input.

Much like Marcelo Bielsa and many head coaches in the modern game, Marsch feels transfers and contracts are best left to the boardroom while he gets his hands dirty on the training pitches. Of course, as he said recently, every head coach will tell you they want the best players possible and Marsch knows his chances of success in West Yorkshire are greatly improved with Phillips and Raphinha in his side.
