Jesse Marsch believes Tyler Adams is close to top form at present following his strong Leeds United debut on Saturday. The midfielder made his first start for the Whites at Elland Road and played his part to help Marsch’s side pick up their first points of the new Premier League season.
He featured alongside fellow new recruit Marc Roca and proved to be a constant pest in the middle of the park, putting pressure on Wolves’ midfield as he looked to break up play. Marsch knows Adams well, of course, having worked with him at New York Red Bulls and RB Leipzig, and the American pair have a very strong relationship.
It was that bond that facilitated Adams’ move to the Premier League over the summer and he looks set to play a key role under Marsch once more this season. The 23-year-old played the full 90 minutes against Wolves and managed to pick up praise from his head coach after the game, but Marsch was also quick to point out the room for improvement he has.

“Quite good,” Marsch said when asked about Adams’ performance. “Any time he was within 5-10 yards of the ball, he was able to put pressure on the opponent.
“I think he won a lot of duels, picked up a lot of loose balls. He was very clever and clear and calm on the ball. Yeah, I think provided a real presence for us in the midfield.
“I think Tyler is, if you include pre-season, playing some of the best football of his career and I know how much even more potential he has.”
Adams wasn’t the only compatriot of Marsch’s making his bow on Saturday, as Brenden Aaronson appeared for the first time in the Premier League, too. The USA international was given the man of the match award and he played a huge role in Leeds’ winner, which was eventually credited as a Rayan Ait-Nouri own goal.
The head coach has revealed he didn’t have too much advice for the pair ahead of the fixture, but he was always confident they would settle in well to the English top flight.
“I've talked to them about their adaptation within the team environment and then also what the league is like but both of those guys are incredibly intelligent,” he added. “We know each other really well. I think there's an ease to the way we work.
“So I'm pleased for both of them because I just think so highly of them as people. So yeah, I think they both had a good match.”
