Jesse Marsch makes 'disciplined' admission but insists he didn't 'cross the line' at Brentford

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch admits that he needs to be more ‘disciplined’ on the touchline but doesn’t believe that he ‘crossed the line’ following his dismissal against Brentford on Saturday.

Marsch has been charged by the Football Association for his behaviour and language after referee Rob Jones overlooked Leeds’ penalty claim in the 64th minute.

Crysencio Summerville’s shirt was pulled by Brentford defender Aaron Hickey outside the box before being tripped just inside the penalty area. The referee deemed it to be a fair challenge and the incident wasn’t referred to VAR.

This provoked an animated response from Marsch and ultimately led to the Leeds manager being shown a red card. Marsch admits that he would’ve ‘tried to contain’ his emotions if he could turn back the clock, but also claimed that Brentford were fortunate to receive a penalty for Luis Sinisterra’s challenge on Ivan Toney in the first half.

“I was even asked at the press conference before that sometimes I am emotional on the bench and I am aware of that and I try to manage that appropriately,” Marsch revealed in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports.

“Even when the penalty was given against us, I handled that pretty well and I stayed calm. At half-time I saw that and for me it wasn’t a penalty. Then a moment when I thought we could be given a clear penalty and it wasn’t even looked at, I was completely emotional and upset.

“In those moments, I don’t want our players to be pushing too hard at the referee and risking getting cards themselves. I don’t think I necessarily crossed the line but I was certainly very emotional in the moment, trying to make a point.

“I was disappointed that it wasn’t reviewed and I was disappointed that I was given a red. In the end, I have to be disciplined because I want our team to be disciplined and I’m an an example for that, and if I had to do it over again I would’ve tried to contain my emotions more for sure.”
